Amethyst
From the Greek amethystos, 'not intoxicated': the Greeks drank from amethyst cups believing it prevented drunkenness. Today it is the best-loved stone for calm, meditation, restful sleep and intuition. The Picker's Rock guide calls it 'renowned for its calming energy, making it ideal for meditation.'

How people use it
Kept beside the bed, held in meditation, or placed on the brow; clusters and geodes are used to 'cleanse' a room.
Care & cleansing
Fades in sunlight (the Picker's Rock guide: it 'can lose its vibrant purple hue if left in the sun'). The Picker's Rock guide recommends moonlight for cleansing and charging amethyst.
General cleansing methods from the Picker's Rock beginner's guide: running water, moonlight, selenite bowls and brief sunlight. Read the guide.
